iPhone saved Max Mqadi’s life – it took a bullet meant for his head [Update]

It is believed the 51-year-old Max Mqadi was on his iPhone when two gunmen shot him on Thursday. A bullet meant for his head was lodged in his iPhone.

Max Mqadi was on his iPhone when two gunmen opened fire and shot him on Thursday. A bullet meant for his head was lodged in his iPhone.

Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele could not yet confirm this.

She said no arrests had been made yet.

Mqadi, who is the founder and owner of Max’s Lifestyle Village in Umlazi, was shot by two suspects who came up to his car.

Upon sustaining the gunshot injuries, he managed to drive himself to Florida Road in Morningside.

Mbele said the shooting happened Thursday evening at approximately 18:55.

“He had climbed into his white Mercedes and was about to enter and turn left into Sibusiso Madekane Road, when an unknown male suspect crossed the road and approached towards the left side from his vehicle and opened fire on him with 9mm firearm. Another male suspect approached from his right side.

“The suspect that came from across the road, fired a number of shots at him, injuring only his arm and leg.”

According to Mbele he immediately drove off and arrived at Florida Road, Morningside, where he received ambulance assistance and was rushed to Umhlanga hospital.

She said Mqadi is in stable condition.

“Bullets damaged Mqadi Mercedes drivers window, passenger window, and the door. At the shooting scene, seven cartridges were picked up.”

She said CCTV footage was viewed, and both suspects had caps and masks on.

No arrests and motives are unknown as yet. Docket still to be registered.

Mqadi is a celebrated businessman, who turned his small butchery spot in Umlazi into one of the Durban’s most vibrant shisanyama establishments.

Meanwhile, the establishment said in a statement on Facebook:

“It is with a sense of relief that we wish to confirm that the founder and owner of Max’s Lifestyle Village, Max Mqadi, survived an attempt on his life last night.

Mqadi was shot at close range by unknown gunmen as he was leaving our globally renowned restaurant in Umlazi.

However, mercifully the owner of the world-class restaurant, which was voted as one of the best restaurants in the world in 2016, survived the attack and is recuperating.

“We wish to take this opportunity to relay our heartfelt gratitude to all South Africans and the global community who have expressed messages of support to Mr. Mqadi. We also urge all the well wishes to continue to pray for his speedy recovery. “
