Theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking is known around the world as one of, if not the smartest people on the planet. He has had movies made about him and he has even appeared on mega-series like The Big Bang Theory, so he also has quite the celebrity status.

Hawking has previously (like many scientists) expressed his belief that humans need to colonise a new planet soon. It seems the time frame that he has given for that though, is cause for some alarm.

100 years, that’s all Hawking has given to keep the human species alive, not 300 or even 1000 just 100 years.  The physicist is set to explain his rationale behind this shockwave in his new BBC program called Stephen Hawking: Expedition New Earth. The show will also explain HOW we as humans must start inhabiting another planet.

Hawking has theorised that the probability of a disaster on Earth adds up over time, therefore making it a “near certainty” in the next 1 000 or 10 000 years. He has also said that he fully believes the human race can survive such a disaster if we expand into outer space.

“With climate change, overdue asteroid strikes, epidemics and population growth, our own planet is increasingly precarious,  Prof. Hawking’s ambition isn’t as fantastical as it sounds.” – BBC statement about the upcoming show

Billionaire CEO Elon Musk has stated his intention to colonise Mars as part of his SpaceX program. Could mars end up being the new home of humanity? Be sure to stay tuned to the BBC channels this winter to see Hawking’s plan in full.
