The family of Shaleen Surtie-Richards has denied ‘unfounded claims’ about the entertainer’s untimely death on Monday. The 66-year-old passed away in her sleep overnight and was struggling with several health problems. However, according to a recently-issued statement, the popular personality DID NOT end her life via suicide.

Tributes have been pouring in all day, from every corner of South Africa. Entertainment and political figures alike rushed to share their condolences, with Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa describing her as a ‘warm and humourous performer’. However, SSR’s nearest and dearest have had to address some fairly unpleasant rumours earlier today:

“Today, the family has to confirm with great sadness the passing of the legendary actress and much-loved TV personality Shaleen Surtie-Richards. We have lost a sister, an aunt, a cousin, and a niece. We’re trying to process, to come to terms and to still our broken hearts. We thank you for your support, as we prepare for her final curtain call”.

“It is common knowledge that she suffered from diabetes and heart problems. Her death might be related to this but the family awaits an autopsy as to the cause of death. All kinds of rumours are flying around as to the cause of death which is why would like to emphasise that Ms. Surtie-Richards did not commit suicide.” | Family Statement
