A horrific video of South African National Defence (SANDF) Soldiers burning unknown bodies on a pile of rubble in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique, sent shockwaves through the country after it hit social media platforms.

SANDF SOLDIERS SEEN IN VIDEO OF BURNING BODIES

The SANDF and other unknown defence force members are seen to be engaged in activities against the law or armed conflict.

The video shows how two soldiers swing a body as they try to throw it on top of the rubble.

Other bodies which were already on fire.

SANDF spokesperson Brigadier General Andries Mokoena Mahapa, said the SANDF is aware of the video clip circulating on social media “depicting members in a yet unidentified Defence Force uniform throwing deceased bodies in a pile of burning rubble as well as the SANDF member(s) standing around watching them.

INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY OF SOLDIERS BURNING BODIES

Mahapa said the incident is believed to have occurred in November 2022 in Mozambique,.

This is where South Africa has committed forces as part of the SADC Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM).

“Once the forces are committed, they form part of a combined force and fall under the command and control of SAMIM.

“South Africa only supports their mission logistically,” Mahapa said.

SANDF DOES NOT CONDONE THE BURNING OF BODIES

He said the Force Commander of SAMIM is investigating its members’ involvement in this despicable act.

“The SANDF does not condone in anyway the acts committed in the video and those who are found guilty of such acts will be brought to book.”

Democratic Alliance (DA) said it was disgusted by the video of bodies being handled in the most undignified manner.

In the video, you can see soldiers swing and try to throw another body on top of the burning pile.

It said at least one of the soldiers at the scene is identifiable as an SANDF member.

DA Shadow Minister of Defence MP Kobus Marais said the SANDF Minister should immediately institute a Board of Inquiry.

He said soldiers involved and their command must be recalled to South Africa and suspended to allow for unrestricted investigation.
