Hoërskool Tuine warns learners and parents of viral meningitis

Hoërskool Tuine in Pretoria West warns parents to watch out for symptoms after a learner has been diagnosed with viral meningitis.

The school posted a letter on its Facebook page on Monday, 27 February, saying a Grade 11 learner at Hoërskool Tuine was diagnosed with viral meningitis.

NAME THE SYMPTOMS OF VIRAL MENINGITIS

The symptoms of viral meningitis are as follows:

  • Fever;
  • Headache;
  • Stiff neck; and
  • Sensitivity to light.

Hoërskool Tuine School Principal J Furstenberg appealed to parents to monitor their children for the abovementioned symptoms.

“If your kid shows the above symptoms, please see a medical doctor. Meningitis is highly contagious and a medical condition and must be treated with the utmost seriousness,” he said.

HOËRSKOOL TUINE SAYS A GRADE 11 LEARNER HAS MENINGITIS

According to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases, meningitis is an inflammation (swelling) of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord.

Viral meningitis is more common but usually less severe than bacterial meningitis.

Most episodes resolve spontaneously and rarely result in death. It occurs more frequently in the warmer months (summer and autumn). Enteroviruses, such as coxsackie and echovirus, usually cause a diarrhoea–like-illness but can often cause meningitis.

Hoërskool Tuine has asked parents to take note of any symptoms, as viral meningitis is highly contagious.
