It’s understood that police have made one arrest already, after a group of hijackers targeted a Cape Town mom and her infant son. The vehicle that was stolen from a location in Observatory was found abandoned by the side of the M5 – but authorities reported that the baby was not present at the scene.

The alarm was first raised by RTC South Africa:

Hijackers steal baby during Cape Town robbery

This sparked an almighty panic within the community, as local groups sent out an immediate alert for the missing child. A frantic effort to find the boy ensued – and we’re glad to say this particular tale comes with a happy ending.

In an update that was shared across several community forum platforms in Cape Town, it was revealed that the tot and his mother have since been reunited, following the horrendous ordeal. The trauma of falling victim to hijackers, and then having your baby snatched is something no citizen deserves to endure.

Observatory community, police praised for rapid response

Details of the incident remain sketchy, but the solitary arrest made earlier this morning indicates that things have progressed quickly in this criminal investigation. It also appears that residents in Observatory played a huge part in raising awareness of the situation swiftly, allowing SAPS to respond in a decisive and prompt manner.

Hats off to all those involved in finding the infant, because this could have all ended very, very differently.
