Hijacked Courier vehicle found abandoned in Kempton Park

Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) officers discovered the hijacked courier vehicle during routine patrols in the Kempton Park area.

A hijacked courier vehicle was found abandoned after the load was stolen in Kempton Park this week.

EMPD RECOVERS HIJACKED COURIER VEHICLE

On Thursday, 18 May 2023 at around 10:00, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Kempton Park Precinct Officers, recovered the reported hijacked courier vehicle on Hugget Street in the Kempton Park area.

According to EMPD, the vehicle was discovered during a routine patrol of the area.

“As the officers were on patrol, they noticed a white [Isuzu] light-delivery vehicle (LDV) with a popular courier company’s insignia, abandoned near a park on Hugget Street.

On closer inspection, the Officers noticed that the vehicle was not locked and that there were parcels scattered across the front seat,” EMPD reported.

“When the vehicle was scanned, the vehicle was positively identified as reported hijacked, and a case was opened at the Norkem Park police station,” EMPD further reported.

HOW THE DELIVERY VEHICLE WAS HELD UP BY THE SUSPECTS

According to an initial report, it is alleged that the courier vehicle was hijacked on Pongola Road, while the driver was there to deliver some parcels.

The driver stated that he was approached by three male suspects driving a black Toyota Yaris, who demanded the keys at gunpoint, putting the firearm on his head.

“The suspects fled the scene with both vehicles.”

Although no arrests have been made, EMPD said the courier vehicle was taken to Van Ryn Deep (police yard) for further investigation by police officials.

YOUNG SUSPECTS HELD AFTER A SHOOTOUT WITH POLICE

Meanwhile, three suspects between the ages of 20 and 25 were arrested by Police in Dobsonville after robbing a courier vehicle and disarming an escort security car at Dobsonville Mall last month.

On 26 April 2023 at about 13:45 at Jonas Moabi Street, Dobsonville Crime Prevention Unit members were involved in a shootout with three suspects which afforded them a recovery of a courier NP 200 bakkie, three unlicensed firearms and cellphones that amount to an estimated value of R210 000-00, said police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo.
