Here are the FIVE best-selling cars in South Africa NOW according to data by the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa). 

DATA SHOWED: HERE ARE THE FIVE BEST-SELLING CARS IN SA NOW

The data showed that the Toyota Hilux stays the best-selling car in South Africa

This is despite selling over 500 units less in December 2022 than the previous month.

WHAT ARE THE FIVE CARS?

The top FIVE cars that sold the most cars locally in December 2022 were:

  • Toyota Hilux – 2,556 units sold (Starting price: R313,000)
  • Toyota HiAce – 1,539 units sold (Starting price: R497,800)
  • Toyota Corolla Cross – 1,834 units sold (Starting price: R360,400)
  • Ford Ranger – 1,495 units sold (Starting price: R349,390)
  •  Volkswagen Polo Vivo – 1,421 units sold (Starting price: R247,300)

WHAT ARE THE EXPECTATIONS FOR 2023: 

The National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa) said as far as 2023 is concerned, the domestic new vehicle market’s performance is expected to remain resilient despite weakening domestic economic indicators and a deteriorating global growth outlook.

“Growing concerns about global “stagflation”, which is high-interest rates combined with slow growth and high inflation, the continued economic impact, and disruption of supply chains resulting from the Russia-Ukraine war, and the current pace of tighter monetary policy in major markets have increased the possibility of a global recession.”

MARKETS EXPECTED TO RETURN TO PRE-PANDEMIC LEVELS IN SALES

It furthermore said there is also a likelihood of further near-term global supply chain disruptions stemming from the rapid re-opening of the Chinese economy, resulting in surging COVID-19 infections.

“GDP growth in South Africa continued to be adjusted downwards and was now expected to be at 1,1% for 2023. In view of the close correlation between new vehicle sales and the country’s GDP growth rate, single-digit growth in new vehicle sales could be expected for 2023 as the market returns to pre-pandemic levels in sales and exports.”
