Hectic! 58 passengers injured in bus roll-over accident in Umkomaas

A total of 58 passengers of a fully-loaded bus were injured when the driver lost control, and it overturned on the R56 near Umkomaas on Monday evening.

SECOND HORRIFIC BUS ACCIDENT IN LESS THAN TWO WEEKS IN KZN

According to Netcare 911 spokesperson Shawn Herbst, the latest accident happened on Monday evening at 21h00.

“At 21H00 Monday night, Netcare 911 responded to a collision on the R56 near Umkomaas Valley, Ixopo.”

He said reports indicate that the driver of a fully-loaded bus, lost control, resulting in a roll-over.

“Medics assessed the scene and found that fifty-eight occupants had been injured.

“Ten people sustained critical injuries, twenty-six seriously injured, and twenty-two people had sustained minor to moderate injuries.”

According to Herbst, the injured were treated on the scene.

“All the injured were treated on scene and, once stabilised were transported by various ambulance services to the hospital.”

The relevant authorities will investigate the circumstances leading up to the crash.

Last week, at least ten people were killed and 50 injured in a horror N3 bus accident on Tuesday, 12 October 2021.

According to police spokesperson Thembeka Mbele the bus, carrying about 66 passengers, was traveling along the Northbound carriage lane of the N3 freeway when the accident occurred.

“It is alleged that there was a blowout on the right front tyre. The driver of the bus lost control, causing the vehicle to veer over the centre medium and as well as over as Southbound carriage lane.”

She said the vehicle then overturned and came to a standstill off the roadway.

“There areten0 fatalities. The injured have been transported to local hospitals. Culpable Homicide case has been opened at Colenso SAPS for further investigation.”
