The Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (HAWKS) arrested a metro police officer on a charge of fraud after she solicited money from a motorist.

The female member of the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) appeared in the Pretoria Magistrates Court on Monday, 13 March, on a charge of corruption after taking a bribe from a motorist.

POLICE SOLICITED MONEY FROM A MOTORIST

The 36-year-old Lerato Ruth Zungu officer was charged with fraud after she reportedly solicited money from a motorist.

Metro police spokesperson Captain Lloyd Ramovha said the motorist was driving a bakkie with a trailer on two along Hans Strydom Road in Silverton.

Ramovha says officers stopped the vehicle for an apparent random spot check.

It is reported that Zungu approached the vehicle and inspected it and the trailer. Following the inspection, Zungu informed the motorist that his trailer and bakkie were not roadworthy.

Zungu allegedly told the motorist that since his trailer and bakkie were not roadworthy, she would have to impound it unless he paid her a gratification of R2 000.

A MOTORIST ALETS THE HAWKS OF THE METRO POLICE OFFICER

Ramovha says the motorist cooperated and stated he needed to organise the funds elsewhere. He alerted the Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (HAWKS).

The Hawks set up a sting operation, and as soon as the metro police officer received the funds from the motorist, they arrested her.

The metro police officer is due back in court on 12 May 2023, pending further investigation.

Zungu is out on R2 000 bail.
