Billionaire filmmaker Tyler Perry’s royal philanthropy fuelled a Twitter frenzy when news broke in Sunday night’s interview with Oprah Winfrey of how he helped Prince Harry and Meghan Markle when they moved to the United States.

According to the couple Perry offered Harry and Meghan a house in which to live in Southern California as well as a full security detail after they were informed that they would no longer enjoy the personal protection of the British royal family’s security services. The couple stayed in his house for three months.

Twitter was ablaze with comments about Harry and Meghan’s interview with Oprah, noting how it was a black man who gave Harry and Meghan a roof over their heads and not one of their many white friends, while a black woman, Oprah Winfrey had provided them with a platform to pour out their grievances with the Royal family.

@saeed_ahmed Tweeted: “Two things stood out to me from the #OprahMeghanHarry interview: – Tyler Perry offered them security when the royal family wouldn’t. – Oprah allowed them to tell their story when the royal family wouldn’t. A Black man gave them a home. A Black woman gave them a platform.”

Some Tweeple posted that the Royal family had “abandoned” the couple but others did not buy this narrative. As @Charlie101c responded: “How did the UK abandon them. We spent $2.4 million doing up a palace for them and then they move. People can barely pay afford to put a roof over their head so I hardly feel like they were abandoned

@hilmi_n1 Tweeted: “Just imagining British twitter trying to figure out who Tyler Perry is when they wake up” following the Harry and Meghan interview.

Sceptical Leggomax asked Twitter: “Will he do it for the common man or there are no homeless man out there in his city before now?”

To which @Longevity_Dan replied: “He’s been doing that before now.. The media decided to talk about this because it involves a high profile Prince Harry. Check out his social media platforms”

@Longevity_Dan Tweets went even further to promote social cohesion amidst some of the more racially nuanced remarks regarding the Harry and Meghan story:
