We’re halfway there. And indeed, there are some political parties who will be Livin’ On A Prayer now that half of all votes in the 2021 Local Elections have been counted. There are still some huge battles to be resolved, and an early night will be nothing but a fantasy for the politicians who remain in a dog fight for results.

Results for the 2021 Elections – latest updates for Tuesday 2 November

The IEC says it hopes to have 90% of votes counted tonight, before final results are declared on Thursday 4 November.

In the meantime, a multitude of coalition agreements are set to be hammered out, with at least 32 councils currently ‘hung’ – this means they have no outright winner, and parties will have to negotiate deals with each other if they want to seize power in these regions. Several metros are also heading for a stalemate.

With 50% of the vote now accounted for, we’ve got a quick run-down of who has performed well, and where parties have enjoyed the most success on Tuesday. Be warned, there are a few shocks and surprises in store.
