The City of Cape Town’s Water and Sanitation Directorate will shut off the water supply to the main Haasendal Gables Mall area in Kuils River from 20:00 on Tuesday, 31 May 2022 until 05:00 on Wednesday, 1 June  2022.

The City’s maintenance crew will be switching over to the newly installed permanent network link and this will enable them to safely remove the previously installed temporary alteration.

WATER SUPPLY DISRUPTION IN HAASENDAL MALL AREA

The City of Cape Town said the temporary bypass on the water supply main has now served its purpose in eliminating water supply disruptions while the construction work was in progress.

“This work would have been done earlier, but it was decided to delay it to prevent any further water supply disruptions resulting from the construction project.

“Careful consideration has been given to this work to ensure minimal disruption to the residents.”

Residents have been urged to store water upfront in clean, sealed containers for domestic use during this period and also to ensure that their taps are closed to avoid water loss and/or damage when the supply is restored.

“The City regrets any inconvenience caused, but it is imperative that it upgrades and maintains its water supply infrastructure to benefit its consumers.”

WATER METRE THEFT ON THE RISE IN CAPE TOWN

The City of Cape Town says there has been a notable increase in stolen water metres reported in several parts.

A total of 3 341 incidents were reported from 1 July 2021 to 30 April 2022. This is an increase of 1 143 stolen water metres compared to the previous financial year’s figures over a shorter period.

Steenberg, Retreat, Grassy Park, Strand, Athlone, Woodstock, Ottery, Bellville South, Lentegeur, Manenberg and Belgravia are some of the areas where there has been an increase in stolen metres.

MMC for Water and Sanitation, Zahid Badroodien said they cannot condone the theft of critical infrastructure.

Badroodien said residents need to be vigilant and report these incidents so they can be investigated. This will help to clamp down on the reckless and inconsiderate behaviour that has a knock-on effect on residents.
