Scholar transport accident: Grade 4 learner killed, two in ICU

An 11-year-old Grade 4 learner sadly lost his life in a scholar transport accident in Rosslyn, north of Tshwane.

Gauteng Department of Education MEC, Matome Chiloane has expressed his sadness after a Grade 4 learner from Laerskool Booysens was killed in a scholar transport accident that involved 23 other learners in Rosslyn, north of Pretoria.

The accident happened on Wednesday, 24 May.

GRADE 4 LEARNER KILLED IN ROSSLYN

Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson Steve Mabona said the accident occurred on Wednesday morning as learners from Mabopane were on their way to school using a minibus scholar transport.

Mabona said two learners were hospitalised and are in the Intensive Care Unit at Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital, while about 21 learners were also rushed to different hospitals and were later discharged after receiving the necessary medical treatment.

“Psychosocial support was provided on Thursday to those who were affected by the incident at the school. The same has been extended to the bereaved family of the 11-year-old deceased learner,” Mabona said.

MEC Chiloane said they are devastated by the unfortunate incident.

“We convey our deepest condolences to the grieving family and school community at large. As the department we call for safety and vigilance on our roads at all times,” he said.
