The Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC), appointed to manage the centenary, is scheduled to brief the nation on plans around the centenary on Tuesday.
The year 2018 marks 100 years since the birth of Madiba and is commemorated under the theme: “Be the legacy”.
“The celebration is a major milestone in the incredible story of Nelson Mandela and our nation’s journey,” said government.
The IMC is made up of 12 Cabinet Ministers together with the Premiers of Gauteng and the Eastern Cape and they are working together with the Nelson Mandela Foundation (NMF) to ensure that government develops a successful centenary programme.
Last week, the NMF said various activities have been lined up to commemorate the late global icon, who would have turned 100 years on 18 July had he lived.
The United Nations declared July 18 the International Nelson Mandela Day. Annually on this day, people across political divides in South Africa and other parts of the world devote 67 minutes doing charitable work and encourage global citizens to take action against poverty.
The 67 minutes signify the 67 years Madiba dedicated to the service of others.
Government’s IMC is comprised of the following Ministers and Premiers:

- Minister of Arts and Culture Nathi Mthethwa
- Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga
- Minister of Communications Nomvula Mokonyane
- Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Dr Zweli Mkhize
- Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula
- Minister of Higher Education and Training Naledi Pandor
- Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Lindiwe Sisulu
- Minister of Public Works Thulas Nxesi
- Minister of Police Bheki Cele
- Minister of Sport and Recreation Thoko Xasa Minister of Water and Sanitation Gugile Nkwinti
- Premiers of the Eastern Cape and Gauteng Provinces Phumulo Masualle and David Makhura respectively
The centenary celebrations aim to promote Madiba’s ethos of Ubuntu by advancing collective unity, irrespective of race, creed and orientation. Mandela died on 5 December 2013 at the age of 95.
