Newly elected Gauteng ANC Chairperson and Gauteng Premier David Makura has revealed some flaws in his party’s government. Hours earlier, President Cyril Ramaphosa had asked members to take an introspective look, Makhura certainly did.

David Makhura: The ANC has neglected the coloured community

With the Gauteng ANC elective conference taking place this weekend, Makhura addressed members while delivering his political report. According to the Premier, the ANC and the various municipalities that it governs need to urgently act to correct the neglect shown to the coloured communities.

Makhura was re-elected provincial chairperson unopposed on Saturday morning. Current Gauteng Education MEC, Panya Lesufi, will serve as the number two in the province.

“As the premier of Gauteng, I have come across indisputable evidence of serious neglect by our government and under-investment in the coloured communities of our province.”

The Premier explained that some coloured people have told him that they were “not white enough” during apartheid and now they are “not black enough” during democracy.

“This neglect will have far-reaching consequences. Crime and drugs have increased, while the standard of living has dropped, including a decline in educational achievement and advancement among our people in these communities,” Makhura explained.

With the poverty levels in the coloured communities in the province seemingly increasing, Makhura believes that this will continue to breed anger against the ANC government.

Makhura holds a Master’s degree in Public Policy and Management from the University of London.

While his deputy might want the EFF back involved with the ANC as soon as possible, Makhura has previously spoken out against the ANC clamouring to keep up with the red berets.

“Stop talking about the EFF’s need to come home and focus on the problems of our people. The ANC needs to focus its [energy] on finding sustainable solutions to the problems faced by South Africans, instead of constantly being reactive to the EFF.”

The DA has said that its goal for the 2019 election is to take the province from the ANC.
