The National Consumer Commission (NCC) urged all individuals who own a GIZZU 300Wh or 500Wh Portable Power Station to stop use and return the items to the supplier immediately.

Syntech Distribution (Pty) Ltd informs the NCC of GIZZU Portable Power Station recall

The recall comes after the importer and distributor, Syntech Distribution (Pty) Ltd, informed the NCC of the products’ precautionary recall after reports of fire hazards. The devices reportedly combusted while charging.

“According to this importer, the product was imported from China and distributed (sold) by Takealot.com, Builders Warehouse, Makro, Incredible Connection and Hifi Corp,” said the NCC.

The portable power stations have a battery manufacturing flaw that could lead to self-combustion and melting while charging.

“In cases where the product’s battery does self-combust, a non-toxic cloud of smoke is released, which may present a fire hazard to nearby furniture,” said the consumer commission.

The Acting National NCC Commissioner, Thezi Mabuza, said the supplier said the recall only affects a small number of units. However, consumer safety is of utmost importance.

“This recall comes at the time where South Africans are grappling with the effects of rolling blackouts and trying to circumvent the effects of load shedding. It is estimated that 3500 units were sold,” said Mabuza.
