The finger-pointing between former cabinet minister Malusi Gigaba and his estranged wife, Norma Mngoma seems to know no end. Gigaba appeared before the State Capture Commission on Thursday evening, 17 June 2021.

He is expected to continue his testimony on Friday.

Gigaba has told the commission that he believes Mngoma was the one behind an alleged plot to have him murdered. He told the commission’s chairperson, Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, that in 2020, he received a text message claiming she had put out a hit on his life.

He said he then approached the police minister Bheki Cele, and the Hawks were roped in to investigate the allegations.

“The minister of police said to me, that ‘I will ask people involved in investigations of political matters and assassinations to contact you’,” Gigaba said.

Norma Mngoma vs Malusi Gigaba

In July 2020, Norma Mngoma was arrested by the Hawks for trashing a Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon parked in their garage. Gigaba said following the incident, he then called the officer who had been assigned the case.

“When this incident happened, I called Captain Mavuso and said: ‘Look, something like this has happened at our residence, will you please come quickly?’,” he said.

Mngoma has previously claimed that Gigaba orchestrated her arrest and used his political connections. The Hawks also confiscated her gadgets, which Mngoma claimed was really a move meant to remove evidence directly implicating him in corruption allegations with the Gupta family.

However Gigaba told Zondo that the seizure of her gadgets had nothing to do with the aforementioned.

“When the police took this stuff it was for the purpose of extracting from her phone, I presume, any information which could lead them to establishing the veracity of the claim that she was involved in a plot to kill me. It had nothing to do with expunging anything from her phone.”

Former minister Malusi Gigaba

Gigaba is considered one of the allies (or former ally at this point) to former president Jacob Zuma, who helped enable grand looting by the controversial Gupta family. Like several other former government officials, Gigaba’s name has come up a number of times at the commission.
