If you’ve ever mistaken South African politics for a long-running soap opera, you’re forgiven. Gerrie Nel has dramatically prepared South Africa for a “big reveal” and the drama shows no signs of stopping.

The AfriForum member – who left his role with the state last year to become a private prosecutor – has announced plans to go after a “well-known political party leader”, as reported by TimesLive. However, that’s about all we know right now.

Who does Gerrie Nel want to prosecute?

Nel confirmed that an announcement would be made at 9:30 on Thursday morning. But no information on charges, the nature of the prosecution or even the name of the culprit have yet been shared.

AfirForum have been more preoccupied recently with their staunch opposition to land expropriation without compensation. They’ve been lobbying their case internationally and appealing for help to halt the redistribution plans.

This will be AfriForum’s second official pursuit of a prosecution against a well-known figure in politics. Last October, the civil rights group began their case against Duduzane Zuma, the son of Jacob and business ally of the Guptas.

However, it wasn’t his finances they were interested in. Duduzane is under the cosh for a car accident he caused four years ago.

On the 1st February 2014, Zuma Jnr lost control of his Porsche on the M1 highway in Gauteng. He slammed into the side of a taxi, claiming the life of a 30-year-old woman and injuring two others.

Deceit and unethical manoeuvres by his defence team kept him out of prison. But wherever there’s an unjust result, there’s Gerrie Nel; frothing at the mouth, anticipating his chance to balance the scales of justice once more.

Duduzane is still waiting to hear what happens next. Meanwhile, South Africa will be on tenterhooks for the evening before finding out who Nel is gunning for.

What’s a good soap opera without a cliffhanger, hey?
