Here is 16 of the 19 accused who are out on bail on charges of defrauding GEMS medical aid scheme.

The 19 accused in the R2.3 million GEMS medical aid fraud were all released on bail in the Nelspruit District Court on Monday, 6 March 2023.

PHARMACISTS DEFRAUD GEMS MEDICAL AID

The Hawks Nelspruit-based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation for Fraud and Contravention of Medical Scheme Act 131 of 1998 arrested the accused, aged between 34 and 66.

Nkosazane Nyathi, Nellie Shabangu, Brenda Nzima, Nokuthula Ubisi, Thabo Ndlozi, Muideen Moshood, Lucky Lubisi, Nomvula Maduna, Sipho Mkhatywa, Nomvula Tolla, Prisca Mokoena, Sarah Nyambi, Sharon Williamson, Veronica Keis, Vusi Mkhumbane and Victor Mpofu appeared all face the same charges of fraud.

The Valencia, Nala, and Buffelspruit pharmacies also face charges of fraud.

FOUR PHARMACISTS INVOLVED IN GEMS FRAUD

It is alleged that members of the GEMS medical scheme colluded with Pharmacies to defraud the medical scheme. They claimed services the pharmacies did not render. They did this in exchange for cash or purchasing items not covered by medical aid.

PENSIONER IN GEMS FRAUD CASE ON FREE BAIL

GEMS medical aid conducted an internal investigation into the fraud. Medical scheme members colluded with the pharmacy directors, Lucky Velaphi Lubisi, Thabo Ndlozi, Nelile Lubisi, and Mukden Mashood, to make misrepresentations to GEMS.

The Hawks started investigating the case in 2020.

Four pharmacists involved in the Gems medical aid fraud are out on R5 000 bail each. A pensioner is out on warning. Fourteen other accused, including three entities, are on R1 000 bail each.

The accused will appear again in court on 28 March 2023 for further investigation. More arrest is imminent. The Provincial Head of the Hawks, Major General Nico Gerber, applauded the team for the stunning work.
