Patriotic Alliance (PA) leader, Gayton McKenzie says members of the LGBTQI community are not allowed in Orania.

McKenzie took to Twitter to share details about his visit to the controversial whites-only town in the Northern Cape.

LGBTQI PEOPLE NOT ALLOWED IN ORANIA

Gayton McKenzie said his visit to the town was inspired by the need to understand the place for himself “beyond the racist tag”.

McKenzie said only white people are allowed to live in Orania, the rulers of this town are not forthright about the fact that blacks cannot buy property or stay there, they hide behind vetting, culture, tradition and rules but Orania is a town for whites only.

“There is merit on their argument that Orania is where they preserve their language, heritage and tradition. I also didn’t see LGBTQI ppl, after asking I was told that they are not welcome,” he said.

REACTIONS TO ‘DISCRIMINATION’ AGAINST GAYS AND LESBIANS

A number of people did not take kindly to what McKenzie had said, especially because members of the LGBTQI community are still discriminated against in parts of the country and around the world.

“So Orania is racist, homophobic and transphobic. I have a feeling they are also sexist. Anyway, I remember my cousin said he was driving through that town and they refused to sell him petrol,” one tweeted.

“Gay community might be officially banned but we all know they exist undercover,” another user also tweeted.

“I’d assume so but what do queer people look like? Could have just stated you wanted to know if queer people could live there openly and that’s why you asked,” one tweeted too.
