Patriotic Alliance (PA) leader Gayton McKenzie says immigrants  will have to carry passports in Johannesburg when he becomes the Executive Mayor.

The current mayor in the City of Johannesburg Thapelo Amad is facing the axe as ActionSA said it will submit a no confidence motion against him and other office bearers. McKenzie who is the current mayor in the Central Karoo District  then put his hand up for the position.

In an interview with the SABC, McKenzie said if he becomes the mayor in the city of gold he would move his offices to Hillbrow deal with illegal immigrants by enforcing by-laws saying metro police can arrest those who do not have their passports with them.

McKenzie further said South Africans would not mind carrying their passports as a form of identification.

“If I’m the mayor of the City of Johannesburg I am telling you they will walk with passports, we will arrest them, we will look for them and go to every corner. In 100 days I would have taken all the hijacked buildings back

McKenzie admitted that they backed the wrong horse in Thapelo Amad saying he can no longer defend him when he “messes up in interviews”.

“We must put the citizens of Joburg first and admit we have backed the wrong horse. Thapelo Amad has been asked to climb a mountain too high for him. It’s not just harming Joburg, it’s destroying him too. We will rectify this blunder. Amad should resign now. We apologise profusely,” he wrote on Twitter.

ActionSA Caucus spokesperson in the City of Johannesburg, Sthembelo Majola, said Mayor Amad, which he labelled as an expedient candidate between the ANC and EFF’s coalition of doom, has time and time again proven to be woefully ill-equipped and unable to articulate a coherent plan of action and vision for the City.

He said since Amad’s election, service delivery in Johannesburg has rapidly deteriorated, with heaps of rubbish piling on the City’s streets.
