A Reality Check from Patriotic Alliance leader Gayton McKenzi is that residents need to pay for electricity in order to fix the Eskom problem.

Patriotic Alliance leader Gayton McKenzie believes Eskom woes can only be resolved if everyone paid for the usage of electricity.
As the country grapples with Stage 6 loadshedding, McKenzie again voluntarily raised his hand up and provided yet another solution to resolve the power crisis plaguing the country.

āPoliticians should encourage payment and cut when people donāt pay,ā he added.
McKenzie isnāt shooting from the hip, the former Central Karoo District mayor is commenting from a place of tested experience having stabilised the electricity crisis in Beaufort West.
āIn total R42m was paid the year before my arrival, R76m has been paid during my year in Beaufort West alone. We canāt always be popular as leaders. We must fix our country by doing our bit,ā the Patriotic Alliance leader said.

In showing good governance, McKenzie in his resignation letter said he left the Central Karoo District Municipality with money in the bank.
āToday there is money in the bank and we have been paying R10 million a month towards our Eskom debt. The collection rate has improved from between 40 and 50% to more than 70%, and it continues to improve. Much more needs to be done, but there is a foundation to work from now,ā he remarked.

Following Andre de Ruyter’s resignation from Eskom, McKenzie made himself available for the position. He even went as far as to discuss his Eskom turnaround strategy in depth. However, the power appointed Calib Cassim to act in the interim.
