Gauteng SAPS: More than 2 000 people arrested this long weekend

Gauteng’s Police Commissioner has lauded members of various communities for helping them pull off some of the arrests

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Gauteng have arrested approximately 2 000 suspects across the province for various offences including possession of firearm, possession of suspected stolen property, drinking under the influence, murder, undocumented persons including domestic violence related issues. The police also seized drugs, dangerous weapons, drugs, liquor, firearms and ammunition.

In Ekurhuleni, 935 suspects were arrested for crimes like murder, carjacking, pointing of firearm, dealing in drugs, failure to comply with the liquor Act and business robbery amongst others. While in Tshwane, 250 suspects were arrested during the tracing of wanted suspects. Those handcuffed include 96 suspects for Gender Based Violence related crimes and 37 undocumented persons.

“West Rand District police together with other law enforcement agencies also had more boots on the ground as they arrested 214 suspects for crimes including rape, common robbery, possession of copper cable, dealing with liquor without a license, possession of dangerous weapon and undocumented persons,” said police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Sello.

POLICE ARREST 527 SUSPECTS IN SEDIBENG

While in in the Johannesburg District, police arrested 527 suspects for hijackings, sexual assault, possession of drugs, rape, armed robbery including contravention of the Immigration Act. A total of 118 suspects were apprehended in that Sedibeng District for possession of stolen property, possession of drugs possession of unlicensed firearm, house breaking and theft.

All those arrested are expected to appear before the various courts on Tuesday, 22 March 2022. Gauteng’s Provincial Commissioner Major General Girly Mbele has lauded community members for helping police in making the arrests.

“Some of the arrests will not have been possible if community members did not come forth with information and also reported those criminal activities. Let us continue working together in the fight against crime,”
