Patients can finally collect their new wheelchairs

Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) is currently contacting patients to collect their wheelchairs.

The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) is contacting registered patients waiting for their wheelchairs to go to their specific hospitals and collect their devices.

THERE IS A BACKLOG OF OVER 2 000 WHEELCHAIRS

The health department has issued 4 586 wheelchairs to patients in the 2022/2023 financial year.

Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, in response to a parliamentary question at the Gauteng Provincial Legislature said there was a backlog of 2 270 people who made requests for wheelchairs.

Since 20 February 2023, 1 499 patients have already been issued with wheelchairs across Gauteng. This leaves a balance of 771 wheelchairs.

HEALTH DEPARTMENT CALLS PATIENTS TO COLLECT THEIR WHEELCHAIRS

“The bulk of our health facilities have received the outstanding wheelchairs that have been ordered and are busy calling approved registered patients to come to collect,” explained the MEC.

Nkomo-Ralehoko said out of the remaining 771 people who have not yet received their wheelchairs, 498 devices are in stock and awaiting collection.

Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital will only get 273 wheelchairs. Rahima Moosa has six patients on the waiting list, 12 at Thelle Mogoerane and two at Jubilee.

PEOPLE IN NEED OF WHEELCHAIRS MUST GO TO THEIR NEAREST CLINIC

“The CHBAH has insufficient storage for wheelchairs as it was damaged after flooding.”

“The hospital is in the process of procuring a storage unit to ensure bulk storage of wheelchairs. Meanwhile, they will frequently place orders in small amounts to mitigate the storage issue,” says Nkomo-Ralehoko.

Devices will only be issued after an assessment by qualified personnel. The patient’s condition/diagnosis determines the type of design of the wheelchair for a prescription.
