Gauteng’s education MEC, Matome Chiloane, is set to visit Primrose Primary School in Germiston on Monday, in response to an alarming incident where a grade 6 boy allegedly shot the school principal.

The incident, which occurred last Friday, has shocked the community and raised concerns about safety within educational institutions.

According to reports, the principal instructed the boy to take out his workbooks and study when the student purportedly fired a shot at him. As a result, the principal is currently undergoing treatment for a gunshot wound in a local hospital.

Law enforcement investigates Gauteng school shooting

Law enforcement officials have launched an investigation into the matter to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure accountability.

In light of this distressing event, the Department of Education’s spokesperson, Steve Mabona, stated, “The MEC will interact with the School Management Team (SMT) and the School Governing Body (SBG) to address concerns and provide support.”

Additionally, the Gauteng Department of Education will deploy a psycho-social support team to offer assistance to those affected by the incident.

Department apologises for location mistake

Furthermore, the department issued an apology. The previous statement inaccurately mentioned the location of the incident as Primrose Hill, rather than Primrose Primary School.

The education MEC’s visit anticipates shedding light on the incident. It also paves the way for enhancing safety and security measures in schools across the region.
