While body of American Gabby Petito may have been found, there remains a cloud of mystery over the circumstances of the tragedy.
Petito, a social media influencer, had been traveling with her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, on a cross-country road trip. According to police, Laundrie returned to his home in Florida, without her on 1 September – she was reported her missing by her family 10 days later.
On Sunday, 19 September, the search for her came took a heart-rending turn as the FBI confirmed finding what they believe to be her remains.
“Full forensic identification has not been completed to confirm 100% that we found Gabby, but her family has been notified of this discovery,” said FBI agent Charles Jones.

- While wide-ranging search for Gabby Petito continued, Brian Laundrie was nowhere to be seen – police say he refused to cooperate in their investigation and appears to have vanished.
- On autopsy has been scheduled for Tuesday, during which officials will confirm the identity of the remains through photographs, personal identification or DNA.
- Police in Florida are currently working on securing search warrants to be able to track both Petito and Laundrie’s cellphones. They are hoping more information as to what’s on their devices could unravel some clues.
- On 12 August, police in Utah, responded to a domestic incident between the couple, however no charges were filed. One of the officers who attended to the call noted in his report that Petito seemed to be in extreme distress, and was never able to “compose a sentence without needing to wipe away tears” while he spoke with her. Petito said she was suffering a mental health crisis – this is yet to be confirmed by her family.
