The Department of Correctional Services has accused private security company G4S of not cooperating in the investigation onto convicted criminal Thabo Bester’s escape from the Mangaung Correctional Centre.

This was revealed by DCS National Commissioner Makgothi Thobakgale during a briefing on Thursday, 30 March at the Grootvlei Correctional Centre in Mangaung.

During the briefing Thobakgale said they were not getting the necessary information and cooperation they needed from G4S in order to be able to conduct an investigation.

The National Commissioner also revealed that DCS will immediately take over the management of the prison adding that this was a necessary remedy following this embarrassing incident, which has undermined the authority of the state.

“The findings of the report into the escape pointed to the fact that the director of Mangaung prison had lost effective control of the facility,” he said.

Thobakgale also revealed that three workers were dismissed and the matter is currently handled by the multinational company.

On whether DCS will cancel G4S’ contract which will reportedly expire in three years, Thobakgale said they are seeking legal advice on how to treat the relationship the department has with the contractor but it will not be renewed.

In a television interview, SAPU spokesperson Lesiba Thobakgale said they have been calling on the Minister of Justice and Correctional Service Ronald Lamola to take back Correctional Centres that companies like G4S and other security companies privately run.

Thobakgale said they believe that government could invest the money spent on paying private security companies by ensuring that more prisons are built.

“DCS should take that responsibility instead of enriching multinational companies,” the spokesperson said.

“We are talking about a maximum security prison, not just a normal prison whereby for you to gain access and so on, there’s quite a lot of procedures that one has to follow. Now the question comes, whose body was it that has been purported to say that it was of Thabo Bester,” he said.
