The end of a cosy office job as a marketing consultant did not deter and demoralise Arthur Mathe from chasing his dreams and continuing to put food on his family’s table.

The 31-year-old Cosmo City street vendor is one of the thousands of South African citizens who were laid off during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mathe worked for a small marketing firm but when Covid hit, he says the business struggled to pay his salary, as a result, the company was forced to retrench staff.

“During Covid, things did not go well for the business. I think the company had financial challenges and had to let us go. I really loved my job but as a hustler, I understood the position of the business.”

After the termination of employment, Mathe wasted no time and started hunting for a job.

“I got a gardener job during Covid and with the proceeds from the job I bought masks which I started selling in the community.”

“Because of my marketing experience and hustle determination, I made that business a success, however, I knew it wasn’t sustainable because the lockdown wasn’t going to last forever.”

When masks became less fashionable, Mathe told The South African that he used the proceeds from the mask business to give birth to the scones business.

“My wife helped me start this business. Our target was to cater to the people going to work who do not have to worry about making lunch in the morning because our fresh and delicious scones are at their disposal,” Mathe further explained.

He added people love their scones to a point where they now sell them in bulks for people having funerals.

As a marketing genius, Mathe constantly reminds his customers on social media groups when and where he his available.

“This one belongs to every dreamer out there who lost their jobs and are unemployed.”

“Grieving the loss of your job and adjusting to unemployment can take time. But Go easy on yourself and don’t attempt to bottle up your feelings. Understand that all good things must come to an end in order for something even better to begin. No matter how much it hurts, hold your head up and keep going. This too shall pass my Brothers and Sisters. Better days are coming.”

With more support, Mathe can turn this business into another cosy office job.
