The #FreeJacobZuma protests are reportedly spreading to Gauteng as an unverified programme of action calls for a shutdown of major roads.

#FreeJacobZuma protests have spread to Gauteng. Several videos were shared on social media which showed parts of Gauteng roads blocked by people believed to be former president Jacob Zuma’s supporters.

Major roads and highways in KwaZulu-Natal were closed on Friday and some remain closed because of the sporadic protests. The M7, a strategic cargo transit route to the Port of Durban and other provincial and municipal links were also affected.

An unauthenticated programme of action against unjust behaviour of the South African Courts'” has been doing the rounds on social media. In the programme, the protestors say they are planning to shutdown major roads in Gauteng. These are some of the roads:

  • N3 – Vosloorus
  • N12 – Witbank
  • N4 – Witbank Bronkorstpruit
  • N1 – Hammanskraal
  • N14 – Olivenhout/Diepsloot

POLICE ‘ON HIGH ALERTIN KZN

Several vehicles were stoned and millions of rands worth of public infrastructure was damaged resulting in many commuters not being able to reach their places of work.

KZN police spokesperson, Brigadier Jay Naicker said police will be focusing on enforcing regulations of the Disaster Management Act.

“A large number of people have already been arrested for incidents of criminality witnessed in the province on Friday and cases have been registered to trace and arrest those that still have to be arrested.”

In a statement, police said at least 27 suspects have been apprehended for the ongoing #FreeJacobZuma sporadic protests in different parts of KZN.

To this end, 27 suspects have been arrested since yesterday on various charges that include: public violence, business burglary, malicious damage to property, and contravention of the DMA lockdown regulations. This comes after an unconfirmed number of trucks were torched and looting of several businesses in the Mooi River CBD. Efforts are afoot to track and trace more suspects.”
