Police: 72-year-old woman arrested for dealing drugs

Anti-Gang Unit members found mandrax and tik worth R60 000 in the elderly woman’s house in Zastron on Monday, said the police.

The police in the Free State arrested an elderly woman for drug dealing in Matlakeng, Zastron on Monday, 15 August, after receiving a tip-off from the public.


South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli said Anti-Gang Unit members were patrolling the area when they received information about a woman selling drugs.

They followed the information to a house in Dinotshing and found mandrax and crystal meth (tik) with a street value of approximately R60 000 after searching the property.

“Members continued the search and found more than 70 identity documents, a driver’s licence, three passports, 56 bank cards and an undisclosed amount of money,” said the police spokesperson.

The 72-year-old woman was arrested and is expected to face charges of dealing in drugs, contravention of the national credit act and contravention prevention of organised crime act (POCA) in the Zastron Magistrate’s Court soon.

In an unrelated matter, Ebrahim Kara, 39, Mishack Ngobese, 47, and Elias Radebe, 42, appeared before the Athlone Magistrate’s Court in Cape Town on Monday.

The trio is charged with dealing drugs. They were busted with 662 kilograms of cocaine with an estimated value of R403 million. The matter was postponed to 19 August when they are expected to apply for bail.
