Free State teacher and Grade 12 marker dies in horrific crash

A young teacher who taught Mathematics and Physical Science and was also a Grade 12 marker in Free State has died in a car crash.

Free State Education MEC, Dr Tate Makgoe, has conveyed her condolences to the family of Grade 12 Physical Science marker Selwyn Petrus Moss who died in a car crash.

The incident happened on Tuesday, 20 December 2022. 

FREE STATE GRADE 12 MARKER DIES  

According to the Free State Department of Education, the 34-year-old teacher died in a car accident while travelling home from a marking centre in Bloemfontein. The accident occurred between Bloemfontein and Jaggersfontein. 

Moss reportedly taught Mathematics and Physical Science at Jagersfontein Combined School, also in the Free State. 

Makgoe has since expressed his sadness and said the death of a young Mathematics and Physical Science teacher is a significant loss to the system.

Makgoe said at 34, the talented, skillful, and energetic teacher still had 31 years before the official retirement age. 

“We have been robbed,” Makgoe said.

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga also conveyed her condolences to the family and colleagues of the deceased, adding that this was a significant loss for the sector. 

“Just when we thought marking had proceeded well without any incident, now we receive the shocking news of this horrific accident,” she said.

Motshekga also urged all road users to obey the rules and ensure everyone arrives alive.
