ESCAPED LIONESS EUTHANISED

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli said the 18-month-old lioness reportedly escaped from an enclosure about five kilometres outside Ventersburg towards Virginia on Friday, 23 September at 4:00.

“The search was initiated and a Team from the Nature Conservation set out looking for it,” said Kareli.

The escaped lioness was spotted late on Saturday, 1 October, next to the enclosure it escaped from. The police spokesperson said the team made attempts at a “successful recapture” but in the end, the predator had to be put down.

“Further investigations revealed that a local farmer lost a total of 15 pigs killed at his farm,” said Kareli. The authorities are trying to establish if the escaped lioness was responsible for killing the pigs.
