Four youngsters killed in a horrific head-on collision on N2

Four young people were killed in a horrific head-on collision on the N2 in Gqeberha in the early hours of Sunday.

THE CIRCUMSTANCES SURROUNDING THE FATAL CRASH IS UNDER INVESTIGATION

Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said the accident happened on the N2 between Seaview and the Baywest turnoff on Sunday at about 00:16.

“SAPS Kabega Park attended to an accident on the freeway in the direction of Gqeberha. A silver Ford Fiesta and a silver VW Polo were allegedly involved in a head-on collision.”

Janse van Rensburg said the driver of the Ford Fiesta, Shano Zeelie (28) and the driver of the VW Polo, Raeeza Ahmed (19), her two passengers Moegamat Noor Fredericks (23) and Raeez Thompson (14), died on the scene while the third passenger was taken to hospital for treatment.

“The circumstance surrounding the fatal crash is under investigation.”

Messages of condolences were posted on social media.

“Westering High School and WOSA would like to extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Raeesa Ahmed (Class of 2020), who tragically passed away last night.”

Shano Zeelie was a high school teacher at Dispatch High School.

Janse van Rensburg said a case of culpable homicide is opened.

Also, on Sunday, two people were killed, and four others were left injured after a bakkie crashed into the N2 Umlazi bridge earlier.

Emer-G-Med spokesperson Kyle van Reenen said two people on the back of the vehicle were ejected in the course of the collision.

“One of them was thrown off the bridge and onto the railway line meters below the roadway, the other was found lying in the roadway. Both suffered fatal injuries and were declared dead on the arrival of paramedics.”

He said four other occupants of the vehicle, including a child, were found to have suffered minor injuries and were treated and stabilized on the scene.

“The cause of the incident and the events preceding it are unclear and will form the subject of a South African Police Services investigation.”
