On Wednesday, law enforcement received a tip about a potential truck hijacking, and a shootout ensued, with four suspects killed

Four suspects were shot dead, and two others were arrested during a shootout with law enforcement agencies on Wednesday, 18 January 2023.

Four suspects shot dead – two arrested

At around 08:00, four suspects were killed and two others were arrested in a shootout with a multidisciplinary law enforcement team.

The team comprised of:

  • Special Task Force
  • National Crime Intelligence
  • Gauteng Traffic Saturation unit
  • Bad Boyz Security
  • Members of the Hawks’ Tactical Operations Management Section.

Tip-off received of a would-be truck hijacking

Crime Intelligence received information about a truck that would be hijacked near Midrand.

The information was put to use when the vehicles of the identified suspects were seen on Olifantsfontein road in Glen Austin.

When the suspects realised the team was about to pounce, they opened fire, resulting in a high-speed chase and shootout.

Four suspects were killed, and two others suffered minor injuries that were treated on the scene.

The truck was allegedly transporting electronic devices.

Two unlicensed firearms were discovered on the scene, and the four vehicles used by the suspects had questionable origins that were being investigated.

The suspects who were apprehended will appear in court soon.
