Four EC suspects arrested and charged after firing guns at KZN funeral

Four suspects from the Eastern Cape who were attending a funeral in KZN were arrested and charged by SAPS for firing their guns.

A funeral in Harding, KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, was subjected to police intervention after an unexpected incident. Four suspects who were attending the funeral from the Eastern Cape reportedly fired shots from their guns.

SAPS’ operation results in the arrest of four suspects

Members from the South African Police Services were conducting an operation in which they monitored the funeral. Provincial spokesperson for the police Colonel Thembeka Mbele stated that a multi-disciplinary operation was being held on Sunday to monitor a funeral in the Santombe area.

Mbele explained that officers heard gunshots from the venue where the funeral was being held. Law enforcement officers identified the suspects and placed them under arrest shortly after the gunshots were heard.

“Police swiftly identified the suspects and placed them under arrest,” she said.

Suspects were charged with three different crimes

Colonel Mbele revealed that the four suspects were charged for the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. They were also charged with discharging firearms in a public space.

The funeral the Eastern Cape suspects were attending was that of a man who was shot and killed in Mthatha (formerly Umtata), according to Colonel Mbele.

“All the arrested suspects are from the Eastern Cape and were attending a funeral of a man who was shot and killed in Mthatha.”

SAPS revealed that three guns were found in the possession of the suspects and were subsequently seized by officers on duty. Police said the three pistols that were found in the suspects’ possession were seized by the police officers. 

The suspects are expected to appear in court on Tuesday, 22 March 2022, reports IOL.

In other news making headlines, e-hailing commuters will have to make plans for alternative transport, at least for the next few days, as drivers from the various platforms, including DiDi, InDriver Bolt and Uber are set to embark on a national shutdown from Tuesday, 22 March 2022 until Thursday.

The drivers have a number of grievances with their respective e-hailing providers and are now demanding the government’s intervention. Chief among their complaints is the fact that the sector isn’t regulated, which they say paves the way for them being exploited by the companies. 

As part of their planned industrial action, the drivers will hand over a memorandum of demands to the Department of Trade and Industry as well as the Union Buildings. Read the full story here.
