The South African Police Service (SAPS) has been left reeling on Monday morning, as four of their own were killed outside Engcobo, on the national highway towards Mthatha in the Eastern Cape. Shockingly, the quartet of victims were in their twenties and thirties, and the death toll increased to five after a civilian involved in the collision passed away.

SAPS confirm four officers ‘killed in car crash’

The harrowing incident saw three male officers and one female PSA member lose their lives as they returned from a crime prevention operation. It’s understood the representatives were positioned at two separate stations. Details of the crash have been kept under wraps, and information about the deceased won’t be divulged until the next of kin have been briefed.

“The four officers were returning from the Chris Hani District where they conducted crime prevention operations and awareness campaigns with communities and schools. The deceased members aged between 25 and 35 were stationed at the Alfred Nzo and OR Tambo districts respectively.”

“They include three male offices, one female who is a Public Service Act member and, one civilian casualty. Circumstances surrounding the accident are currently under investigation. Police have registered cases of Culpable Homicide for investigation. Details regarding the cause of the accident will form part of the investigation.” | SAPS statement

Investigation launched into fatal car crash

Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga has ordered a speedy and meticulous investigation into the mysterious circumstances that led to this overwhelmingly devastating collision. The top cop has been left ‘dumbfounded’ by the quadruple tragedy.

“As SAPS management we are shattered by this sad news. We do not need this and the untimely heart-breaking departure of our young and upcoming leaders has left us dumbfounded. I convey my heartfelt condolences to all the families of the deceased, whom I will be meeting with later this week.”
