Four members of a Free State family murdered, police launch manhunt

Four gunmen attacked a Welkom home on Monday night. Four family members including a 10-year-old girl were shot and killed. The police said two young boys managed to escape and alerted their neighbours.

Four members of a family were shot and killed by unknown gunmen on Monday night, 30 August, in Free State. The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Thabong, Welkom, said the motive for the brutal attack is not yet known.

MOTIVE FOR SHOOTING UNKNOWN SAY POLICE

According to SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Motantsi Makhele, four armed men allegedly entered a house in New Stands, Thabong at approximately 21:00 on Monday and opened fire randomly on the family inside the house.

Four members of the family were fatally wounded: a 59-year-old woman, a 31-year-old woman, a 23-year-old man and a 10-year-old girl.

Two young boys aged six and nine years old, managed to escape unharmed and told their neighbours about the shooting incident.

The police said the motive for the brutal killings is unknown at this stage and a manhunt to track down the suspects responsible has been launched.

In an unrelated matter, six people were shot and killed in a mass shooting over the weekend in Umlazi, KwaZulu-Natal. The unknown suspects allegedly opened fire at the U Section in Umlazi at approximately 19:00 on Saturday.

“Four people were declared dead at the scene while the other two died in hospital. Among the victims are two females. The victims are believed to be between the ages of 14 and 28,” said Brigadier Jay Naicker.
