Four children drown at sea on New Year’s Day

Police are still searching for the body of one child after four children drowned after being swept out to sea on New Year’s Day

The South African Police Service, with the assistance of the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) and other stakeholders, is continuing the search for the fourth body after four children were allegedly swept out to sea and drowned on New Year’s Day at the Kariega beach in Kenton on Sea.

Four children drown at sea

On Sunday afternoon, 1 January 2023, at approximately 17:00, police and the NSRI responded immediately to a report of a drowning in progress at Kariega beach in Kenton On Sea.

Three victims are said to have died despite extensive Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation efforts.

The hunt for the fourth victim, a nine-year-old boy, is still ongoing.

The identities of the three deceased children, aged 11 to 12, will be released once the formal identification process is completed.

Inquest dockets were opened by police for further investigation.

Bystanders help woman in another incident

On Sunday, 1 January, at 15:00, NSRI Strandfontein, Life Health Care paramedics, WC Government Health EMS, and CoCT Law Enforcement officers responded to the Muizenberg lifeguard tower.

Paramedics continued CPR, and after CPR was successful, the woman was transported to the hospital by EMS ambulance in critical condition.
