The Presiding officers of parliament signed off on a new travel policy that will entitle former Members of Parliament (MPs) to a dozen free flights, on Monday, 28 March.

FORMER MPs GET A DOZEN FLIGHTS PER ANNUM

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, and the Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), Amos Masondo, approved the “Travel Policy for Former Members of Parliament.”

The new policy applies to any MP who served in Parliament for a continuous period of five years or longer – alternatively, it applies to MPs who completed a full term that lasted less than five years.

The aforementioned MPs will be entitled to 12 single air tickets per year for a period of five years after their exit from parliament.

The tickets, which are meant for the personal use of the former minister, are for economy class and domestic travel only. The benefit extends to ministers’ registered spouses.

However, if the MP dies within the benefit period – the surviving spouse or life partner will be entitled to six tickets until the end of the original benefit.

Any tickets that are not used within a financial year are forfeited.

The policy is effective from 1 April 2022.
