Former learners, who were touched by the disquieting video of a learner torching the car of a deputy principal, have come out to lend a helping hand.

FORMER LEARNERS TOUCHED BY DISTURBING VIDEO

Last week, a video of a Grade 10 learner from Northbury Park Secondary School in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal went viral after he allegedly set a staff member’s car alight.

It is reported that the incident stemmed from the acting principal reprimanding the learner for carrying a phone to school and confiscating it.

It is further reported the learner was angered by the action taken by the teacher and resorted to bringing petrol to school and allegedly dousing the car before setting it alight.

However, what is seen in the video is a number of students attempting to extinguish the fire using a hosepipe.

This entire act was unsettling to the former learners whom without involving the school spearheaded the crowdfunding campaign which mainly targets former, existing learners and any Good Samaritans out there.

THE AIM BEHIND THE CROWDFUNDING CAMPAIGN

According to a circulating poster among the former learners, the fundraising campaign is meant to assist the affected deputy principal with any expense revolving around the repairing of her vehicle.

“We can either sit back and criticise the system or help the traumatised educator get over this unfortunate incident with a bit of financial assistance to cover her costs”

In the statement, the former learners defended the educator. “ Like any other educator, this teacher contributed to many lives and her style of discipline came from a place of parenthood and professional conduct”.

They also called on the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education to act decisively over this matter.
