Rescue efforts have been intensified with the use of high-tech gadgets by the City of Johannesburg Emergency Services in a bid to recover Khayalethu Magadla or his body.

The six-year-old boy from Soweto slipped and fell into a manhole on Sunday afternoon while playing with his friends in a nearby park.

Various tactics have been performed by emergency services role players in an attempt to recover the young boy, but did not yield any tangible results.

THE RESUE MISSION OF KHAYALETHU MAGADLA

From combing the scene, probing sewer split chambers to sourcing intervention from other entities, the task proved difficult.

However, Joburg EMS resorted to high-tech gadgets as a new strategy to lead them ahead.

Earlier today, MMC for Public Safety David Tembe visited the scene to monitor the advanced technology that had been introduced to the search.

He inspected the boat and the robot that was used to assist in the search and rescue mission of Khayalethu.

“We trust this technology we’re deploying here will assist us in finding the boy. I want to thank everyone involved in this,” Tembe said.

“Our hearts and prayers are with the family of the missing Khayalethu. As a department, we have resolved to ensure that they receive regular updates on our search and rescue mission everyday as this search continues,” Tembe added.

Johannesburg Emergency Services spokesperson Robert Malaudzi has shared some footage of the boat and robot sifting through the gushing manholes as part of his updates.

Upon observation, the gadgets have cameras and are monitored from a laptop as they provide eyes inside the manholes.
