The price of milk and chicken is expected to rise in coming weeks in SA, according to BusinessTech.

This comes as a direct result of load shedding as the poultry industries and farms are struggling to function with the persistent load shedding. For poultry industries, the continues power outages have resulted in the inability to slaughter chickens regularly while for cattle owners, they have been unable to keep their milk stored in a cold storage facility.

INCREASE IN MILK AND CHICKEN PRICES IN SA LIKELY

Load shedding is costing South Africans big time and it is only about to get worse with the price of milk and chicken expected to rise.

Furthermore, the Agricultural industry is struggling to make profit a a result of the continuous power outages.

This was confirmed by Christo van der Rheede, an executive director at Agri SA. Rheede spoke to 702 and issued the following key update on the expected price of milk and chicken:

“If you’re a dairy farmer. You cannot milk your cows. You cannot keep your milk in a cold storage facility when there’s no electricity… The same applies to irrigation farmers that are irrigating grains, maize, sugar cane, also other crops,” Rheede stated.

Therefore, we can expect a similiar increase in maize, sugar cane and most crops. While the price of chicken will increase unless government decide to make it zero-rated. In fact, there is currently a shortage of poultry items.
