Breaking: Five-year-old boy gunned down in Lavender Hill

An investigation is underway after a five-year-old boy was violently gunned down in Lavender Hill on Saturday 21 December 2019.

A five-year-old boy was gunned down in Lavender Hill in Cape Town, on Saturday 21 December 2019. 

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS) the attack took place at Drury Court in Lavender Hill on Saturday afternoon.

Western Cape SAPS, FC van Wyk said that officers and crime experts were on the scene. The circumstances surrounding the shooting are under investigation.

Police confirm suspects fled the scene

Van Wyk said the suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested.

“Crime scene experts are currently combing a scene for clues at Drury court Lavender Hill, Steenberg, where a five year old boy was shot and fatally wounded at about 14:15 today,” said Van Wyk.

“Circumstances surrounding this shooting incident are under investigation. A murder case was opened for investigation. The suspects fled the scene and yet to be arrested,” he added.

Latest incidents of gun violence in Cape Town 

In a separate incident in early December, 10-year-old Ayesha Kelly died after being caught in the crossfire of gun violence. At the same time, a 16-year-old boy was injured during the shooting in the same area, according to EWN.

Two months ago, a 13-year-old girl was also shot and wounded in Hanover Park amid gang violence.

In another incident three months ago, a 12-year-old boy was killed in gang violence. He was one of three children killed in a shooting in Clarkes Estate, in Elsies River. 

An 18-year-old man also died following the shooting in the Cape Town community.

A woman, 28, in Hanover Park was said to be in the wrong place at the wrong time when she was gunned down during gang crossfire on Sunday, 17 November 2019.

SAPS spokesperson, Mihlali Majikela said: “According to reports, members of Philippi police responded to a complaint of a murder at the mentioned address.”

“Upon arrival, they found the body of a 28-year-old woman lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the upper region of her body. Circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation and no arrests have been made as yet,” said Majikela.  

UPDATE: Police later confirmed that a 22-year-old man was also shot and injured in the same shooting incident. He was transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. A murder and attempted murder case was opened for investigation.
