ICYMI: Five-month-old baby allegedly murdered by uncle with a spade

A five-month-old baby boy from North West has died after he was allegedly hit by a spade that was aimed at his mother.

A 38-year-old man from Extension 4, Kgakala Township in Leeudoringstad, North West  is expected to appear in court after allegedly hitting a five-month-old baby with a spade. 

The incident reportedly happened on Saturday, 5 November and the suspect was arrested on Sunday, 6 November 2022. 

FIVE-MONTH-OLD BABY ALLEGEDLY MURDERED 

According to a report at the disposal of the South African Police Service (SAPS) the 16-year-old mother of the five-month-old infant had an argument with her uncle on Saturday, 5 November 2022. The uncle then went outside and came back with a spade and tried to assault the niece, but ended up hitting the five-month-old baby boy the mother was carrying on her back.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Funani said the baby was taken to a local clinic where he was transported to Wolmaransstad Hospital and ultimately transferred to Tshepong Hospital where he died due to head injuries. 

“The suspect is expected to appear in the Leeudoringstad Magistrates Court on Tuesday, 9 November 2022, for murder,” she said. 

North West Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena,  condemned the incident and applauded the police for their swift reaction that led to the arrest.

In a separate incident, police in Lebowakgomo outside Polokwane have opened a case of inquest after the body of a missing 21-month-old baby girl, Motheo Rashilo, was found in the bushes near Màlatane Village on Wednesday 2 November 2022. The infant was reported missing on Friday 28 October.
