First transwoman Cwenga Titi could not be prouder of herself after she made it through the traditional rite of becoming a man.
FIRST TRANSWOMAN GOES TO THE MOUNTAIN
Cwenga, who lives her life as a proud transwoman underwent the traditional passage of becoming a man by spending almost a month at the initiation school.
The 18-year-old pupil from Thembalethu High School in Qonce (2022) completed her exams and defied the norm by taking a trip to the mountain.
THE CHALLENGE FOR INITIATE CWENGA TITI
According to Drum, Cwenga Titi became the talk of the town in Grahamstown when she came out as the first transwoman to go through the traditional male initiation school in November last year.
She told Drum that this was not an easy journey as she would sometimes have to tap into her masculine side to fit in.
“Yoh, whenever people came I had to act straight and couldn’t wait for this whole thing to pass at some point.”

THE BIZARRE MOMENTS OF 2022 INITIATION SEASON
Cwenga was not the only unique feature in last year’s initiation season. Unlike Cwenga, a group of Ama2000 initiates who are proudly gay did not fake their lives but lived it to the fullest during the initiation journey.
The group, striking poses in white paint trended late last year and brought the entire tradition into question.

In other parts of the province, images of high-end treats such as Sushi, gym equipment and entertainment by means of DSTV were found at the initiation school.
The sighting of these unheard-of accessories in this traditional setting caused an uproar on social media many questioned how Sushi and watching DSTV channels would empower and educate the young boys whose mission was to graduate to manhood after completing the ‘course’.
It remains unclear how this kind of lifestyle was permitted by the leaders of the initiation camp.
