Fire fighters are battling the flames of a blaze that broke out at a business premises in a busy part of Durban on Monday.

Durban residents awoke to a morning of at least two fire reports across the city on Monday.

eThekwini Fire Services is fighting a raging blaze that had broken out in a building in Brickfield Road in Overport, Durban on Monday morning.

Marshall Security community support spokesperson Andreas Mathios said the local security company had received multiple reports of a fire in the Overport area. The blaze broke out in a warehouse early on Monday.

“eThekwini fire services are currently on the scene in Overport in Brickfield Road where a business premises is on fire,” he said.

He said that multiple fire engines had arrived at the scene to assist with fighting the blaze.

“At this stage we don’t know what the cause of the fire is but damage is extensive and expected to run into millions of Rands,” Mathios said

He said there were currently no reports of fatalities at the scene of the incident. 

“Marshall security control room received multiple reports of the smoke and dispatched the necessary first responders to the scene,” he said.

Earlier in the morning there were reports of a service delivery protest in Isipingo Rail area where protesting residents blocked Old Main Road with burning tyres.

eThekwini Metro Police Spokesperson Parboo Sewpersad, said the residents, who lived in informal settlements, had embarked on a service delivery protest, regarding the provision of improved housing.

eThekwini Fire Services, metro police and members of the SAPS had responded to the scene of the service delivery protest which had blocked traffic from travelling along old main Road during rush hour. Police and fire fighters worked this morning to douse the flames and clear the roadway of the rubble and tyres.

Several videos of the service delivery protest, depicting segments of the road that had been blocked with burning tyres, were widely shared on social media on Monday morning.
