The rich are getting richer, and that’s certainly the case for Johann Rupert and his net worth. The billionaire’s finances have been a major talking point over the last couple of months, and our homegrown tycoon is now sitting on more money than he’s ever had before – beating the record high that he set only last month.

How rich is Johann Rupert? Net worth continues to soar

In charge of the Remgro Investments vehicle, Mr. Rupert has a hand in most spheres of business. Retail, media, and hospitality ventures all end up bringing home the bacon for South Africa’s richest citizen.

And, in recent weeks, Johann Rupert has broken into the top 250 wealthiest people on the planet, according to the Bloomberg Billionaire’s Index. This latest surge in his net worth also puts him on the brink of a major landmark.

In total, the 71-year-old is now valued at $9.95 billion by the financial experts – leaving him just short of becoming the first South African estimated to be worth $10 billion or more. For those who want it in ZAR, that’s about R146 billion.

The man has got money… and then some. It marks an incredible 12 months for the businessman, who has seen his capital rise by almost $2 billion from this time last year. That’s an increase of approximately 25%.

Who are the richest people on Earth?

However, Johann Rupert has got a long way to go if he wants to compete with the richest individuals on the planet: Elon Musk has managed to blow Jeff Bezos out of the water, and the Pretoria-born tech whizz is now valued at $236 billion. He is clear of Amazon founder Bezos by almost $40 billion, Bloomberg reports.

Way to make $197 billion look like child’s play, Elon. Bernard Arnault, Bill Gates and Larry Page make up the top five, and they are all worth over $125 billion. Only one other South Africa citizen makes the list, and Nicky Oppenheimer resides in 337th place – thanks to his $8.13 billion fortune.
