The ANC’s head of elections, Fikile Mbalula, flashed receipts of Mosiuoa Lekota’s support of Freedom Front Plus’ (VF Plus) stance on the land issue, as the preliminary results trickled in on Thursday, showing a bleak picture for the Congress of the People (COPE).
You will remember that in 2018, Lekota was very critical of the ANC-led government’s stance on land. He stood firmly against the expropriation of land without compensation, calling on supporters of the controversial Bill to pay for their own land.
This is a sentiment that’s shared by the leadership of the VF Plus. Pieter Groenewald, along with minority lobby groups like AfriForum, have warned against the amendment of Section 25 of the Constitution, citing that it would most certainly cause a civil war.
With the country currently in the process of electing its new leadership, Mbalula thought it would be necessary to remind Terror Lekota that the ANC was not disillusioned by his uncharacteristic support for policies that are not in the interests of the country’s majority.
Mbalula took to Twitter and posted an image of Lekota stealing a moment with Groenewald in Parliament and captioned it with a taunt at the COPE leader.
So, if I defend you on this issue of land – will you reserve this seat for me after 2019 elections ? pic.twitter.com/O3iqihUAru— Mr Fearfokkol | Forever Young (@MbalulaFikile) May 9, 2019
Shots fired! At the time of publication, the ANC had garnered 55.75% of the support, a landmark gap between them and COPE who have only scraped 0.35% of the votes.
