Fifth suspect arrested in mayor’s murder in Limpopo

A fifth suspect has been apprehended in connection with the murder of the mayor of Collins Chabane Municipality, councillor Moses Maluleke.

FIFTH SUSPECT APPREHENDED BY THE POLICE

Police provided an update on their fruitful investigation into this high-profile case.

“The team of investigators assigned to probe the murder of the Mayor of Collins Chabane municipality, the late Cllr Moses Maluleke, succeeded in positively linking another suspect to his murder.”

Police say this linkage brings the total number of suspects arrested for the murder of the mayor to five.

The mayor was shot and killed at his house on Thursday 21 July. His 18-year-old son was also shot and injured during the incident.

CASH REWARD ISSUED BY THE POLICE

Following the incident, police in the province offered a reward of up to R250 000 for any valuable information that could lead to the arrest and subsequent conviction of the suspects responsible for this murder.

Almost two weeks later, police in Limpopo confirmed the arrest of three suspects in connection with Maluleke’s murder, who was laid to rest at Shikundu outside Malamulele in Limpopo on 2 August.

The 56-year-old, who served as the ANC deputy secretary in the Vhembe region, was affectionately known as ‘Big Moss’.

COURTS WARNED AGAINST LENIENT SENTENCES

At the funeral, Limpopo Premier Stan Mathabatha warned the courts for handing down lenient murder sentences to criminals.

While we wait to hear the reason behind Maluleke’s murder, it is widely speculated that Moses Maluleke was gunned down for his political position rather than what could be perceived as a ‘robbery gone wrong’.
